Gautam K Bandyopadhyay, Ph.D.
Scientific Advisor
Dr. Gautam K. Bandyopadhyay is a metabolic scientist with extensive experience in insulin signaling, glucose and lipid metabolism, and the molecular mechanisms underlying metabolic disease. His research has focused on defining abnormalities in cellular signaling pathways associated with obesity, insulin resistance, and related metabolic disorders. Among his contributions, he identified a role for atypical protein kinase C zeta (PKCζ) in regulating glucose transport in skeletal muscle and adipose cells.
Dr. Bandyopadhyay subsequently collaborated with Sushil K. Mahata, Ph.D., on studies examining the metabolic actions of catestatin (CST). This work demonstrated beneficial effects of CST on inflammatory and metabolic abnormalities in experimental obesity, including improvements in glucose homeostasis and reductions in adiposity and lipid accumulation in adipose tissue and liver. These studies contributed to the scientific foundation for developing CST-based approaches to obesity and associated metabolic disorders.
His research has also advanced understanding of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) signaling in the liver. Dr. Bandyopadhyay identified a mechanism involving transfer of GLP-1 receptor protein to hepatocytes through exosomes derived from pancreatic islets and Kupffer cells, providing a potential mechanism for hepatic responsiveness to GLP-1. His studies further implicated EPAC2/SOCS3/AMPK signaling in the regulation of hepatic glucose production.
At CgA Therapeuticals, Inc., Dr. Bandyopadhyay provides scientific expertise in metabolic biology, insulin signaling, obesity, and diabetes, supporting the development of CST and related therapeutic candidates for cardiometabolic disease.
